JOURNAL ENTRY 6 ( ARTICLE )

                                      RAPPORT TALK AND REPORT TALK

In the article '' Raport talk and report talk'' Deborah Tannen indicates that while women feel comfortable doing 'private speaking', men feel comfortable doing 'public speaking' ; that is, men mostly talk for information whereas women talk for interaction. I agree with the writer since it is obvious that women talk in such a way to express everything they have in their mind that even little details of a topic are worth for them to say while men do not take notice of these details at all. Talk is an essential complementary element for the process of making connections for girls' friendship in youth. For instance, they share secrets. relate experiences, reveal problems and discuss options and these are necessary for their development. On the other hand, boys generally take another approach to friendship in their youth. Theirs is different, but not less profound. Their less talking or their result oriented talking does not mean their relationship is weaker than that of girls. Contrary to girls, buddy groups of boys tend to be larger and focusing on activities rather than conversation. This differentiation between boys and girls in youth leads to dissimilar communication styles in adulthood. That is, males remain action-oriented; their goal of communication is to achieve something. As for women, they communicate through dialogue, discussing choices, problems and emotions in their adulthood, too. All in all, we can say that men's and women's perception of communication differ from each other and maybe most of the problems resulting from misunderstanding each other or the conflicts between them stem from these potential communication differences of men and women.
